COLLEGE TUTOR DAVE ROGERS SCOOPS MERSEYSIDE ALLSTAR AWARD - 08/03/2010 00:00:00 College tutor Dave Rogers has been recognised as a Merseyside Allstar after receiving a prestigious award in recognition of his contribution to education and training.

Dave, who has been teaching apprentices at the Maritime and Engineering College North West for the past ten years of a lifelong career in education, picked up his award at a celebration dinner earlier last month to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week. The event was organised by the Learning and Skills Council and Radio City to thank employers, learners and staff for their commitment and achievements in the field of work-based learning, and was held at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool. Managers and colleagues from the Maritime and Engineering College also attended the dinner to join Dave in celebrating his award.

Jim Teasdale, college principal, said: “ I have known Dave both personally and professionally for more than 25 years and am delighted that his commitment to improving the lives and career aspirations of so many young people has been recognised in this way. The award is very well deserved.”

Dave Roger has worked in the field of education for over 44 years and, in that time, has helped train literally thousands of young people for the engineering industry. Dave has also worked tirelessly to champion jobs with real career development potential for school children and the under privileged. His personal commitment in helping young people aspire towards a worthwhile future includes teaching self defence and confidence building, and is also reflected in the work he does for local charities. Dave also trains young people in the art of Judo in his spare time.

Engineering apprentice is at the cutting edge of work - 03/02/2010 00:00:00 Feb 3 2010 by Alex Turner, Liverpool Daily Post

A WIRRAL teenager is gearing up for success in the engineering industry, thanks to an apprenticeship at a Merseyside training college.

Jamie Byrne, 17, from Beechwood, is working at Runcorn-based Bilfinger Industrial Services while completing an Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) qualification at Maritime and Engineering College North West, based in Birkenhead.

Apprenticeships are available in 190 different job areas across private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Mr Byrne, who started his Apprenticeship in September, liked the mix of training and work. He said: “I was attracted to the idea of earning while I trained and always wanted to work on-site, so an Apprenticeship was the ideal option.

“A typical day for me as an apprentice involves a mixture of theory and practical work – we’re well supervised but also allowed to work independently.”

Di Shanks, human resource manager at the Maritime and Engineering College North West, said: “Jamie showed great initiative and persistence when applying for his position on the ECITB programme. I was immediately impressed.

Submarine back on public display at Woodside Ferry Terminal in Wirral - 12/01/2010 00:00:00 A FULL-SIZE replica of the world’s first mechanically-propelled submarine is back at the Woodside Ferry Terminal, in Wirral, after a facelift.
The 10-ton replica of the Resurgam has returned from the Maritime and Engineering College North West – formerly the Laird Foundation – in Birkenhead where students helped in the refurbishment. Merseytravel chief executive Neil Scales said: “She’s looking as good as new and I know she’ll prove to be a popular addition to the U-Boat Story attraction. We’ve also repositioned Resurgam so she is now displayed more prominently for visitors.”
The original Resurgam was built in Birkenhead in 1879 by Cochran and Co.
